Accounting Assessment Book Change

The book for the Accounting Assessment has changed. The new text required is The Survey of Accounting: Making Sense of Business by Katherene Terrell and Robert Terrell. This book is available via amazon.com. I have never tried it before, but decided to buy a used book from amazon.com for $5 plus shipping.

CPS handed out the following study outline for the test:

Snagit

Another Qunnipiac University CPS semester has ended, and the majority of the courses required a  PowerPoint presentation. PowerPoint provides the designer with quite a few options. However, if you want more creative freedom, a neat tool to have in your tool box is SNAG IT.

This tool allows you to capture, edit, and share images.  All of the images on this post were created using SNAG IT. And guess what?  If you click here SNAG IT allows you a free 30-day trail offer period to experiment with the tool. On the web site a third of the way down hit the TRY button. 

 

The tool will give you a choice on  what key you would like to use to initiate the software to capture a "snagit" picture.  The two key choices you have are either hitting the CTRL-Shift- "P" keys or just hitting the Print Screen key (usually located above the home key). I prefer the long way (CTRL-SHIFT-"P"key) just because that's how I learned it along time ago. And we all know it's hard to teach an old dog a new trick.

Once you capture the picture using your key preference you will then be brought into the SNAGIT software where you can edit you captured data. Then save to a file or clipboard (copy all icon) then hit DONE.

When you flip back to your PowerPoint, just hit the CTRL "V" key and your image will appear on your powerpoint presentation.

If you decide to buy the product on this particular site it runs under $40.00. Haven't had the time to see if someone else has a lower price. But even at $40.00 I'll bet you'll find it pretty nifty.

Metrics Assessment

I'm not sure about you, but I never ended up taking my metrics assessments. First of all, when I originally attempted it there was a password issue. So instead I tried the practice test with a buddy. Oh boy, what a joke, I think maybe we got two right. Actually, my buddy got them right. We never laughed so hard. Every one knows that to find out the distance from point A to point B when you take a detour to point C is to call Triple AAA and get a Trip-Tik..

Then of course I panicked. There is no way I can take this test and pass. Plus I wanted to take the blogging course which was at the same time as the metrics lab. If I fail the assessment test I would not be able to take my elective. Do I skip the metric course, take it and the lab when the next group of OL students come through. The dilemma! So I called the CPS office, and they told me to go ahead and sign up for blogging and metrics course. They were offering the lab more for the students who felt they needed it. For me that was good news. I could take my elective and keep on the required course track. 

Now, the question is do I need to take that darn metrics assessment. Quite frankly, What questions on the assessment have to do with scorecards? If I don't take it or don't pass, later on down the road as I'm traveling from point A to point B is someone going to throw me into point C.  And not allow me to graduate because I did not take an assessment or replace it with the lab?  So best thing to do, is take the dilemma to CPS.

To make a long story short here is the scoop from Professor C. Harrison:

       "The assessments for the 2 labs (OL 610L and OL 620L) have been eliminated. These two labs are elective courses; therefore the decision to whether or not to enroll is up to the student."

Problem solved, I do not need to take the lab assessment! You must admit the CPS program does evaluate courses and requirements on a frequent basis and makes appropriate changes as needed. Talk about good process measuements.

Saturday Class

This Saturday, April 22, 2006 is the third and FINAL on site class. OL620 will meet from 9:00 to 12 pm in the College of Liberal Arts, Building 1, room 120. I'm assuming the Boundaries class is also in that building, but don't quote me.

I'm not sure about you, but I like classes in this building. You almost feel like your in your own world, since it is tucked away on top of the hill away from the center point of campus. In addition, you never have to worry about parking!  I have never known a college to have as many weekend social and sporting events for students and parents, like Quinnipiac.

If you have pre-registered for  Summer 1 Term, textbooks can be picked up in the CPS office (Tator Hall) from 8:15 to 9:00 am or 12 to 12:30 pm on Saturday.

PS - As long as I don't oversleep, planning on bringing the donuts from Neil's.

Fun Blogs

We have introduced you to some business blogs, but what about some fun!

There are tons of "fun" blogs whether it be to introduce you to the latest gadgets or to the newest reciepe. Other blogs report on the latest sports action (yes, Yankees' fans live in this household) or introduce you to scrapbooking. Or perhaps your worried about your finances. Of course their are travel and entertainment blogs.

Although, the blog action may just be gaining popularity in the business arena, the personal and special interest blogs are off and running.

Easter Story

Three blondes (natural) died and found themselves standing before St. Peter. he told them that before they could enter the Kingdom, they had to tell him what Easter was.

The first blond said, " Easter is a holiday where they have a big feast and we give thanks and eat turkey."

St. Peter said, "Nooooooo," and he banished her to Hell.

The second blond said, " Easter is when we celebrate Jesus' birth and exchange gifts."

St. Peter said, "Nooooooo," and he banished her to Hell.

The third blond said,she knew what Easter is, and St. Peter said, " So, tell me."

She said, " Easter is a Christian holiday that coincides with the Jewish festival of Passover. Jesus was having Passover feast with his disciples when he was betrayed by Judas, and the Romans arrested him. The Romans hung Him on the cross and eventually he died. Then they buried him in a tomb behind a large boulder."

St Peter said, "Verrrry good."

Then the blond continued, "Now every year all the Jews roll away the boulder and Jesus comes out. If he see his shadow, we have six more weeks of basketball."

St Peter fainted.

Weekly Activities - The Metrics Readings

Do you prefer your weekly readings embedded in the activities assignments or aggregated all together under a readings' classification. Maybe it's just me, but it is driving me crazy that the readings are not incorporated into the weekly activities. Not only am I spending alot of time searching for the reading, but I am also printing off the wrong reading since many readings are by the same author. I find this organization requires more of my time. Maybe this organization might work better if the readings' classification was divided by Week 1, Week 2, etc.., or maybe I just need better organizational skills.

Was wondering how other people felt about this setup.

According to Wired Magazine as of 4/4/06 5.4% of the Fortune 500 companies are blogging. Althought this number seems low company blogging is beginning to gain popularity.  Even Boeing's Vice President of Marketing is blogging. Click here to see other Fortune 500 company blogs.

How to comment on a blog

If you want to see other comments written just double click on the comment at the end of a blog post. If you want to comment on a "TypePad" blog all you need to do is at the end of the post double click on comment. This will bring up a comment box where you can enter your name, whether it be full, first, nickname, or initials. Then enter your email address. You also have the option to enter a URL if you have your own website or blog. Write your comment in the comment box. Hit preview to take a look at your comment and make sure your satisfied with your remarks. Then hit post to actually post your comment to the blog.

One more week ...

And we have another semester under our belt. How fast the terms fly. Us metric folks are engaged in preparing our H & R Block scorecards or perhaps actually trying to finish up our personal tax returns. How are the scorecards going for everyone? Our group is doing fine. I'm just concerned about meeting his expectations. Not comfortable about how many measures we really need to define. Or how detailed we need to be about other aspects of the company, such as mission statements and recommendations.

I'm sure the boundaries course is working on their term paper. At least, this time around the briefs were due periodically, since I think during the last course, the majority of us were writing a dozen or more briefs plus our research paper the week before Christmas.

This semester has been a bit difficult for me, especially since I have two classes this semester. Two courses can be a challenge for the part-time student. But, I have had a lot of fun and enjoyed the elective. Electives should be fun, especially since we get to choose the course of interest. It might be neat if one semester the program took a break from the required courses and only offered elective choices. It would give us an opportunity to meet others who just recently started the program.

I would really like to sign-up for the e-business elective, but not sure if I can deal with two terms back to back of intense pressure. Have many others signed up for the elective?

  Well, try to enjoy the holiday inbetween school work.

Competency Assessments

For those of us who do not have a recent (within the last 10 years) accounting or marketing course to meet the degree requirements we need to take the accounting and marketing competency assessments.

The book recommended for the marketing assessment is The Principles of Marketing by Philip Kotler and Gary Armstrong.

The book recommended for the accounting assessment is the OL220 Business Accounting by Porter/Norton/Swain/ Alberecht/Stice/Stice which is only available at the QU bookstore. If  I remember correctly it runs about $85 or maybe it was $65.

Recent News Events

The Sikorsky Strike has finally ended. John Guzzi, a Quinnipiac Student, created a blog, WalkingTheLine capturing the events of the historical strike. At one point he even had to shut off allowing any comments. At least everyone is back to work.

The newest historical event to track is what will happen to our automobile industry. But, then again with the price of gas in Connecticut who will be able to afford to drive. A chain email has been floating around encouraging us not to buy gas from the large oil companies. What can the general consumer do to stop the rising gas prices? Let's face it, these companies are not hurting, as they post record profit highs far beyond the highest profit gains of non-oil companies.

Priceless

With all the great information that has been posted to our blog. I figured I will lighten it up a bit with a few jokes and funny stories from time to time. Here is a classic and also a late great find for the sons.

The story is priceless. From today's New York TImes:

Everyone thought the conservator did it. But as it turns out, it was the husband, in the throes of a bitter divorce.

For serveral years, museum curators and American paointing experts had been troubled by discrepancies between Norman Rockweell's 1954 canvas "Breaking Home Ties" and tear sheets of the legendary Saturday Evening Post cover for which he painted it.

Comparing the two, experts mused that the painting's colors seemed oddly washed out. They conjectured that a zealous conservator had overcleaned the work ...

The painting's provenance was undisputed: Don Trachte, known as the cartoonist who took over the Sunday edition of the comic strip "Henry" in the 1940's, bought the painitng from Rockwell for $900 in 1960. It became his prized possession. So prized, it seems, that when Mr. Trachte and his wife, Elizabeth, jointly filed for divorce more than a decade later, the cartoonist cooked up a ruse, presumably to ensure keeping the treasure himself, hiding the orginal in a secret niche behind a wall in his house in Sandgate, Vt.

What he and his wife subsequently divvied up -- the Rockwell and seven other paintings by other local artists -- were therfore copies, presumably made, their children say, by Mr. Trachte himself.

Last month -- more than three decades after the divorce, and nearly a year after Mr. Trachte's death -- his son Dave, 54, noticed a strange gap in a wood-paneled wall in his father's house. When he and his brother Don Jr. , 59, gave it a shove, the wall suddenly slid open, revealing the Rockwell and other canvases hanging on a wall in the hidden compartment.

"Every divorce is always a little messy." conceded Don Jr. in an interview ...

Mr. Trachte's ex-wife, Elizabeth Markey, now 98, is apparently unfaxed. When her eldest son gave her the news, he said, her response was a wry, "Doesn't surprise me."

Great Leadership Books to Read

Spring is around the corner! Well at least this past weekend I had the heat off, can't say the same for tonight. But anyways, I was trying to change my pack rat ways and do a little spring cleaning when I came across this paper "Great Leadership Books To Read".  Not sure where this paper orginated, and I can't say that I actually read any of these books. I do have one on my bookself that was a present (no pun intended) but it is just collecting dust.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts or insights on the following "GREAT LEADERSHIP" books or if they had any of their personal favorites. I was a bit surprised not to see any of John Maxwell's books, but perhaps this list orginated prior to his popularity.

Benefit of Doubling up on Electives

   This is a little piece of 411 that I found out during OL-620's on-site class Saturday.  The date of finishing all requirments by February 24th, 2007 pertains to OL students that started in the fall of 2005, but the doubling up pertains to all of the OL graduate students that want to finish early.  If you want to graduate early doubling up your electives with a sequential course will allow you to get done 7 weeks early per elective.  Take Pam, Mike, and myself as an example we doubled up OL-620 with OL-665, and if we double up one more elective, we will be done February, 24^th, 2007 instead of June 16^th, 2007.  Do not be mislead, it is tough but I believe it is well worth finishing 3 and ½ months early.

Prerequisites: passing grade on Marketing Assessment.

NOT OFFERED AT THIS SESSION -- But here is a description of other types of electives

OL 661--Managerial Economics (3 credits) Principles and theories of micro- and macroeconomics pertinent to contemporary organizational decision making.  Participants will learn to use fundamental economic concepts by applying them to real world events and/or problems. Designed for managers in both corporate and non-profit settings.  Prerequisites:  OL601, OL 620 passing grade on opt-out test

OL 662-- Principled Leadership (3 credits) -This course is a comprehensive study of leadership morality workplace ethics, and servant leadership.  The course approaches the study of organizations from a holistic viewpoint.  The concepts of values and integrity are explored in depth.  Prerequisites:  OL601

OL 663--Analytical and Research Skills for Leadership (3 credits) This course is designed for those engaged in evaluating or conducting original or secondary market or competitive research.   Focus is on real world business research cases and examples.  Students will learn to work with statistical software to conduct and evaluate original research from original survey and secondary data.  Emphasis on using the Internet as a research, analysis, synthesis and presentation tool.  Prerequisites:  OL601, OL 620 or passing grade on opt-out test.

OL 664--Operations Management (3 credits) This course stresses effective problem solving associated with the planning and control of organizational operations.  Focus will be on the measurement and analysis of internal processes of profit and not-for-profit organizations.   Major quality control processes that contribute to efficiency and effectiveness are core elements of the course.  Prerequisites:  OL601, OL 620 or passing grade on opt-out test, OL 220 or demonstrated equivalent competency

OL 665 – Blogging-Engaging Markets with Next Generation Web Technology (3 credits) This course immerses students in blogging so that they have a practical basis for assessing three elements critical to the newly emerging face of the Internet: pushbutton web publishing, xml syndication, and mass interaction.  In combination, these elements allow companies to more easily discover and engage their online markets, with potential to influence key customers and opinion makers. Prerequisites: None

A Sad But True American Management Joke

The following is a joke that was sent to me that I had to post.

"A Japanese company and an American company decided to have a canoe race on the Mississippi River.  Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak rowing performance before the race.

On the big day the Japanese won by a mile.

Afterward, the American team became very discouraged and depressed. The American company decided the reason for their crushing defeat had to be found, and formed a Management Team made up of its senior executives to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

The American Management Team eventually discovered that the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and one person rowing. The American Management Team hired a consulting firm to assist in analyzing this data, happily paying their considerable fee. After six months of hard work, the consulting firm concluded that too many people were steering the Americans boat, while not enough people were rowing.

So the American Management Team acted: To prevent losing to the Japanese rowing team again the following year, the team's management structure was totally reorganized to include 4 steering supervisors, 2 area steering superintendents and 1 steering manager. They also implemented a new rowing performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to row faster. It was called  "The Rowing Team Quality First Program," with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower. In an all-out attempt to further provide incentive for empowerment and enrichment to the rower, new state-of-the-art paddles were provided. Also for motivational purposes, the rower was promised a new medical benefit package. Additionally, a shorter work week and higher wages were offered, all contingent on a decisive victory in the coming rowing competition.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American Management Team laid off the rower for unsatisfactory performance, halted development of a new streamlined canoe, sold the state-of-the art paddles and canceled all capital investments for new equipment.

The money saved by this maneuver was distributed to the senior executives as bonuses for a "job well done."

OL Program Grading

I like the rest of you have been in this program since the programs beginning, and as of now we are about to complete the fourth required course.  In two out of the four courses we received feedback in a timely fashion. One course has been over since mid December, I still have not received a grade on about 60% of the assignments and the other section received no graded assignments. In the OL-620 class we are about to finish our fourth week and only the first week of work has been graded.  Evidently, the professor is having technical difficulties.

I do not know about the rest of you, but I live by simple beliefs.  One of them is " if you cannot grade it, do not assign it".  Hopefully it will get better as they iron-out the troubles in running a new program, but as of now I am a bit disappointed.

Neil's Donuts

Before class, plan a trip to Neil's Donuts in Wallingford (83 North Turnpike Road/Route 150) for the best New York style "homemade" donuts in the state! It might not look like much of a store front, many years ago it was the historic       J & B penny store.  As a kid my father would take us every Sunday to get his newspaper and us kids a 10 cent chocolate bar. Ten cents, that gives you an idea how long this store front has been in Wallingford. But, I guarantee that you will be coming back for more. It attracts a crowd, so allow extra time just in case your timing is off and you hit a peak crowd time.

He also sells delicious Italian cookies and other baked goods such as bagels, pies, coffee cake, and muffins. Plus he has excellent coffee, and if your addicted, there is always Donut Donuts coffee just a few yards down the road.

Here is an article voting Neil's as one of America's Top 10 Donut Shops. I guess I didn't do it justice by saying it was the best in the state.

Virtual Office launch

The blogging class was the first OL course to attempt the technology of Qunnipiac's Blackboard virtual office technology.

Prior to the meeting a set of instructions were emailed explaining how to initiate the session. Of course, when reading the instructions 5 minutes before the meeting, I panicked when I saw insert your microphone. Was I suppose to buy a microphone?  Well, although I couldn't get my audio to work, I guess you do not need to buy a microphone.

The screen was chopped up in about 4 or 5 sections. One section on the left seemed quite large and was filled with figures of a person from shoulder up and your name under the picture. We had about a half dozen on the call. If you have a large class, I fear the whole screen will be filled with silhouettes. Personally, I thought this was alot of space used to represent who was on the call. Especially since the actual follow my example work area was too small to view. In this area, there was no straight forward enlarge/maximize screen button. My eyes suffered trying to follow along. In the bottom right hand corner was an area where you could type in and chat. This was especially helpful if you could not get your audio to work.

In general, the audio was beyond poor. Either the professor or other students voices echo and faded in and out. Finally, we gave up on the audio and switched to a conference line hosted by www.intercall.com . This proved to be quite productive.

Students, at their places of business have had experience with Sametime web conferencing and it wins hands down when compared to the Breeze web conferencing.

Although the technology was poor, we must commend Quinnipiac University's CPS for providing and experimenting with innovated ways to allow the professional student a "classroom" interaction without physically needing to be present.

QU Course Pricing Policy

      Apparently Qunnipiac University policy (not College of Professional Studies) states that graduate program participants must pay graduate course credit prices for UNDERgraduate courses. 

For example, if you need to take the OL220 Business Accounting course, which is an undergraduate course, you will pay graduate course credit prices. Yet as a member of this class you would not have a graduate level instruction experience.

      Personally, I feel that not only is this policy not fair, but also it might deter a graduate student, such as myself, from signing up for a undergraduate course simply to pursue a field of personal interest.

      Let us know your opinions on this policy.  Is it fair?  Would you take  a non-required undergraduate course at the higher cost? I wonder what the policy is after you graduate from a graduate program.

OL Program offers First Elective

Weblogs also referred to as blogs have a vast range of purpose from personal to business. Weblogs were developed in the late 1990’s and have transformed the architecture of the Web in a short time.

Bud Gibson, Ph.D., who teaches advanced information technology solutions at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, is conducting the first Organizational Leadership elective, OL665 Blogging Engaging Markets with Next Generation Web Technology.  In the fall of 2005 he conducted a workshop “Using Blogs to Increase Collaboration, Information Flows, and Marketing Effectiveness” at Quinnipiac University. Gibson has extensive experience with enterprise information architectures, designing back-end databases, integrating them with content management systems, and architecting syndication and publication strategies. He has a MBA and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon.

According to Gibson’s first class announcement,  “This course immerses you in blogging and other Web 2.0 technologies so that you have a practical basis for assessing three elements critical to the newly emerging face of the Internet: pushbutton web publishing, xml syndication, and mass interaction. In combination, these elements allow companies to more easily discover and engage their online markets, with potential to influence key customers and opinion makers.”

So far students are working on the logistics of TypePad, one type of blogging tool, and are immerged in creating individual and team blogs. Blogging can be quite addictive and time consuming; therefore, it might be best for the part-time student if the course is not taken with other courses. However, from its start students are finding the course rewarding, plus a platform to utilize your Politics of Communication skills.

OL 610 Politics of Communication

The Power and Politics of Communication course receives rave reviews! So far, rated as the course most applicable to the business environment.  Should the OL program include more business communications classes?

OL Labs get mixed reviews

The OL writing lab received mixed reviews. Do the timing of the labs need to be shifted, so that the lab starts the Saturday after the first Saturday of it's corresponding class? And does the timing of last lab class also need to be adjusted? What do you think needs to change in order for labs to be more beneficial? It will be interesting to see how the metrics lab rates. Did the metrics lab receive lower attendance due to the disappointments of the writing lab?

Organizational Leadership Program
